Sentiment among eastern German companies continued to weaken in December. The Business Climate Index for the Eastern German economy fell from 104.2 points to 102.9 points. Survey participants upwardly revised their assessments of the current business situation slightly, but significantly scaled back their expectations for the first half of 2019.

In eastern German manufacturing sentiment weakened clearly as the year drew to a close. The manufacturers surveyed were markedly more satisfied with their ongoing business. Sentiment weakened, however, due to the sharp downward correction in business expectations.

In eastern German wholesaling the business climate index fell significantly. The wholesalers surveyed were slightly less satisfied with their ongoing business. At the same time, the business outlook clouded over again significantly for the first half of 2019. In eastern German retailing sentiment firmed somewhat. The retailers surveyed clearly upwardly revised their assessments of the current business situation. Their business expectations were slightly more pessimistic.

In eastern German construction sentiment weakened clearly. This was due to poorer assessments of the current business situation by the contractors surveyed. The six-month business outlook clouded over slightly.
