ifo Business Climate for Eastern Germany - Results of the ifo Business Survey in October 2018

Sentiment in the eastern German economy improved in October, following two consecutive decreases. The business climate index for the eastern German economy rose from 104.5 points to 106.3 points. Survey participants upwardly revised both their assessments of the current business situation and their business expectations.

In eastern German manufacturing sentiment strengthened slightly in October, but is still significantly below the high reached in April this year. Manufacturers’ assessments of both the current business situation and business expectations improved somewhat. Capacity utilisation remained almost unchanged this month.

In eastern German wholesaling sentiment improved sharply. The wholesalers surveyed were considerably more satisfied with their ongoing business. Their six-month business outlook also improved. In eastern German retailing the business climate cooled down markedly. The retailers surveyed were less satisfied with their current business, and their business expectations were more pessimistic.

In eastern German construction the business climate hit a new all-time high. This was due to the assessments of the current business situation, which also reached a new record. Business expectations improved slightly too.
