ifo Business Climate for Eastern Germany - Results of the ifo Business Survey in January 2018

The eastern German economy started the year in high spirits. The ifo Business Climate Index for Eastern German rose clearly in January from 113.9 points to 115.1, thus exceeding its previous all-time record high of September 2017. This was primarily due to survey participants’ assessments of their current business situation, which improved in nearly all segments of the economy. As far as the six-month business outlook is concerned, eastern German companies on average expect business to remain good.

In eastern German manufacturing sentiment remained equally as strong as last month. The manufacturers surveyed were slightly more satisfied with their ongoing business. The six-month business outlook, by contrast, clouded over somewhat.

The climate in eastern German manufacturing brightened very clearly in January 2018. Wholesalers’ assessments of the current business situation increased very strongly and their business expectations also improved slightly. In eastern German retailing sentiment also improved. Retailers assessed both their current business situation and their business expectations more positively in January 2018.

The business climate in eastern German construction also continued to improve at the beginning of the year. The contractors surveyed were far more satisfied with their ongoing business than previously, but slightly less optimistic about their six-month business outlook.
